Mangrove Forests

Sri Lanka has lost around 76% of its mangrove forests over the past 100 years. It has become the first nation in the world to comprehensively protect all of its mangrove forests. Sri Lanka President Maithreepala Sirisena said, “It is the responsibility and the necessity of all …. to be united to protect the mangrove ecosystem.”

Scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, USA, found that in California, mangroves demonstrably boost fishery yields by an average of about $37,500 per year per hectare.
