Socotra is home to exotic nature and wildlife and was known as the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean for decades. It is the worlds tenth richest island for endemic plant species and the biggest island in the Indian Ocean spreading over 125 kilometers in length and 45 kilometers across.

The Dragon Tree is the most famous and distinctive plant on the island. It is an evergreen tree known for its unique shape of an upside-down umbrella.

It is named for its dark red resin known as dragons blood, a substance which has been highly prized since ancient times. It flowers in February and the fruits take five months to develop. It is also used for medicinal purposes as an antiseptic, antiviral, antidiarrhetic and for treating tumours.
