Socotra1

Socotra has a diverse geology and a climate that varies between areas thereby creating a diversity of ecosystems. You can find dense evergreen and semi-evergreen woodland in wet and sheltered areas but there are also drought-adapted plants surviving in desert-like landscapes.

It is because of such high diversity and endemism in plants, the islands have been declared a WWF Global 200 Ecoregion, a Plantlife International Centre of Plant Diversity and are included in the Horn of Africa Biodiversity Hotspot.

Desert Rose is one of the most famous of the Socotran bottle-trees. These trees store water within their trunks to help them survive the more arid environments on Socotra.

It can grow to 10 feet in height and is a popular bonsai plant. The sap of its roots and stems is used as arrow poison for hunting large game in Africa.

It has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

Delhi is choking again. AQI levels have slipped into the ‘severe’ zone, cloud seeding failed, and emergency measures barely make a dent. Because the city doesn’t need one-off fixes, it needs long-term healing. Trees remain the simplest, most effective answer. They absorb carbon, trap dust, cool the air, and act as natural lungs. If Delhi wants cleaner winters, it needs more green cover, not just temporary interventions. Clouds may not cooperate, but trees always will.
