| Sweet Chestnut is deciduous tree native to Europe and Asia widely cultivated for its edible seeds. The tree can reach a height of around 115 feet. It requires a mild climate and adequate moisture for good growth and good nut harvest. Although the raw nuts are edible, they are astringent and unpleasant to eat. Hence, they are often roasted and cooked before being used in confections, puddings, desserts and cakes. The Roman soldiers were given chestnut porridge before entering battle. The leaf infusions are a popular remedy for whooping cough and other respiratory diseases. A hair shampoo is made from infusing leaves and fruit husks. |
