Botanical Name Rubus fruticosus

Blackberry or Rubus fruticosus is famous for its fruit called blackberry. It is a shrub that grows up to 3 meters tall at a fast rate. This plant usually bears thorns, but some cultivated varieties are free of thorns. Blackberries are perennial, lasting for three seasons or more. The plant structure may vary from sprawling to almost erect with the stem growing up to 7 meters in length.
Rubus fruticosus flowers in early summer and late spring. The flowers have 5 pale pink or white petals and multiple stamens. 

Once the petals fall, the fruit develops an aggregate of drupelets that are green in the initial phases but turns red to black on ripening. Blackberry fruit has medicinal, cosmetic, and nutritive value. It has a pleasant and sweet taste and is an excellent source of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Antioxidants such as Vitamin C and E, carotene, lycopene, lutein, and many other substances present in blackberries play a significant role in preventing cardiovascular diseases, cancer, macular degeneration, and Alzheimer’s disease.
