Jamun is an evergreen tropical tree in the flowering plant family of Myrtaceae. It is native to the Indian Subcontinent, the adjoining region of Southeast Asia, China, and Queensland. A slow-growing species, Jamun can reach heights of up to 30meters and can live more than 100 years. Its dense foliage provides shade and fruits that are eagerly sought by several birds and wildlife.

 

The Jamun timber is water-resistant, and also used in railway sleepers, and to install motors in wells. The leaves are mostly used as nutritional fodder for livestock. It starts flowering from March to April. The flowers are fragrant and small and the fruits develop by May and June. The seed of the fruits is used in many alternative healing systems like Ayurveda, Unani and Chinese medicine. The bark of the Jamun tree is used in dyeing and tanning. India ranks second in the production of Jamun in the world. Jamun possesses a significant position in the agri-farming culture of India with its high ecological as well as economic values.
