Miyawaki Projects

About Miyawaki

The Miyawaki method, developed by Japanese botanist Dr. Akira Miyawaki, is an afforestation technique that creates dense forests mimicking natural forests. The aim is to create forests in limited spaces, such as urban environments. It involves planting a diverse mix of species in a layered pattern to minimize space requirements. This approach accelerates growth, boosts biodiversity, improves air quality, and significantly reduces the temperature of the region.

Replicating dense forest

The process involves a detailed survey of a natural forest to document its native species, vegetation structure and biodiversity requirements. This is followed by site preparation, including soil enrichment and the establishment of an efficient irrigation system.

How Grow-Trees.com Implements It

At Grow-Trees.com, the Miyawaki process follows a meticulous sequence:

  • Site Survey & Analysis: Ecologists assess the area, soil, biodiversity, and climate.
  • Land Preparation: Soil is enriched with biomass and organic matter.
  • Species Selection: 50–60 local species are chosen to maximize biodiversity.
  • Plantation: Local communities plant saplings before monsoon, approximately 2-3 months prior, applying mulch to retain moisture.
  • Monitoring & Replanting: Regular checks ensure survival; dead saplings are replaced.
  • Handover: After about two years, when the forest is self-sustaining, it is handed to local communities.

Benefits of Miyawaki Forests

  • Creates dense, fast-growing green cover in limited space.
  • Enhances biodiversity and provides habitat for wildlife.
  • Improves air quality and sequesters carbon.
  • Boosts water retention and reduces soil erosion.
  • Generates rural employment and produces valuable Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) like fruits, medicinal plants, and bamboo.

Salient features of the method are:

Up to 10 denser than conventional planting methods.

50 plus local species planted per site.

Up to 30× better at noise attenuation, air pollutant filtration, and dust suppression.

Sequesters CO₂ up to 30× more efficiently.

Average annual growth of ~1 m.

Chemical-free, supports local biodiversity.
