It fares poorly in shady conditions and grows best in full sunlight. It is used for colouring food, especially sweet dishes and Kashmiri dishes like chicken curry, soups, etc. Saffron is also used as an antiseptic, antidepressant and has antioxidants that cure digestive disorders.
