SMI Coated Products adopts 15,000 Trees for TribalsĀ® project! Odisha has a scheduled tribe population of 9,590,756, the third highest amongst all states in India (census 2011). The economy of Koraput district is primarily based upon forestry and agriculture (including shifting cultivation) and the bulk of commodities used domestically for everyday use are agricultural and forest products. The district with semi evergreen to deciduous vegetation is endowed with various wild plants as a natural resource. Grow-Trees.com initiated this project to regenerate degraded forests and extend vegetative cover to reduce and reverse the devastating effects of soil erosion and run-off of water. This will not only enhance the environmental conditions in the area but also provide indirect empowerment to tribal communities along with fruits, fodder and non-timber forest produce. We are also creating rural jobs in this area where jobs are rare, in the nursery, planting and post-planting activity, amongst tribals and women. The 15,000 trees to be planted will create approximately 1,350 workdays of jobs in the nursery and planting activities alone. This project has been adopted by SMI Coated Products, a leader in label solutions and in green initiatives.
