Tata Capital adopts 50,000 Trees for Tigers® project! Sariska forest area was protected till 1947 by the State of Alwar, with only the royals allowed hunting privileges, and a vibrant tiger population flourished. After independence till 1955, some of the forest was cleared, shooting of wildlife permitted, human settlements increased and agriculture and mining commenced. In 1982, it was finally declared a Tiger Reserve. The tiger census of 2001-2 found 24-26 tigers in the reserve. However by 2005, it was confirmed that the tiger population had been completely decimated. Poaching was blamed for the total loss of a tiger genome of the Aravallis. Thereafter, government relocated 3 male and 5 female tigers originating from Ranthambore to repopulate Sariska with tigers of a similar genome, and it was estimated in May 2015 that there were 13 tigers in Sariska, including 4 cubs.
Regrettably, cattle grazing, illegal mining, and felling of trees for timber and fuel, continue to put pressure on the 881 sq kms notified as Critical Tiger Habitat. Grow-Trees.com therefore initiated this project of planting 50,000 Trees for Tigers® in the periphery of Sariska Tiger Reserve to mitigate the anthropogenic pressure in the core areas. This project has been adopted by Tata Capital, a leader in financial services and a leader in green initiatives.
