It can grow to around 15 feet in height and one of the longest surviving trees is around 350 years old. It stores water at the bottom of its stem which appears swollen and hence the common name “”Elephant’s foot or Bottle Palm””.
It has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. Today, it is planted for ornamental purposes in many parts of the world.”
