“Deodar or Himalayan Cedar is native to the Himalayan regions including India.
It is a very tall tree with some specimens reaching heights of around 200 feet.
The botanical name and the English common name is derived from the Sanskrit term devadru. It means “”wood of the gods””, a compound of deva “”god”” and dru “”wood or tree””. Among Hindus, it is worshiped as a divine tree.
It has anti-fungal and insect repellent properties. Rooms made from this wood are used to store meat, food grains like oats and wheat in Shimla, Kullu and Kinnaur districts of Himachal Pradesh in India. Cedar oil is used in perfumery and aromatherapy.
