| Australia has around 10 per cent of the worlds biodiversity and is also the driest inhabited continent on earth. While Australia is rich in biodiversity, its soils are highly dependent on vegetation cover to generate nutrients and provide stability. Soft Tree Fern can at times grow to around 50 feet in height. It is native to eastern Australia. The trunk of this fern is the remains of earlier growth of the plant and forms a medium through which the roots grow. It occurs in high altitudes and is the most found tree fern in south eastern Australia. It is used as a food source, with the pith being eaten either cooked or raw and is a good source of starch. It is planted for ornamental purposes in gardens and for landscaping. It has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. |
