Socotra5

We are back to our series on the trees found on Socotra islands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Socotra comes from Sanskrit sukhadhara means “supporting or providing bliss”. On surveying the island, the Centre for Middle Eastern Plants has found that 37% of the plant species found are native to this island and cannot be found on any other place on Earth.

Angkalanthus grows in subtropical to tropical dry forests and rocky areas.

It produces attractive orange-red flowers. The flowers curve upwards and backwards thus regaining their original upright position despite hanging upside down. It is considered an endangered species.
