| Shagbark Hickory is a deciduous tree and can grow to over 100 feet in height. The nuts are edible and are often eaten by squirrels, chipmunks and mice. The seventh president of the United States of America, Andrew Jackson was nicknamed Old Hickory after a play on the toughness of hickory wood. In 1830, he began planning the construction of his tomb at his plantation in Tennessee, USA. The site was surrounded by a variety of trees and six shagbark hickories. They stood there for 168 years until a storm in 1998 razed over 1,200 trees at the site. The work on replanting them is an ongoing project. |
