Lord of the Forest

Tne Mahuta means “Lord of the Forest” in Mori and is the largest standing kauri tree in New Zealand.

It is said to be around 2,500 years old, 168 feet tall with a trunk girth of 45 feet and is the most famous tree in New Zealand.

According to Maori myth, Tne is the son of Ranginui – the sky father and Papatuanuku – the earth mother. The birds and the trees of the forest are regarded as Tnes children.

During New Zealand’s drought in 2013, 10,000 litres of water from a nearby stream was diverted to this tree as it was showing signs of dehydration.
