Komuru

Komuru is native to Central America and parts of South America.

It can grow to a height of 25 to 30 meters and its seeds are known as ‘tonka’ beans that are very popular. They are black and wrinkled outside and have a smooth, brown interior. Their aroma is similar to that of vanilla, almonds, cinnamon and cloves.

Its beans have been used as a substitute for vanilla, in perfume, and in tobacco. It was banned in some countries like the USA as large doses can be harmful to the heart and liver.

It is popular locally and generates a significant income for rural families in hard times.
