Desert Fig

Desert Fig is native to central and northern Australia.

It is an evergreen tree that can grow to around 30 feet in height. The fruit is edible and can be consumed when it is soft and ripe. It was a popular bush food for the aborigines.

Its roots swell with water and the process can create enough pressure to crack rock thus giving it the name rock fig. Over hundreds of years it has contributed to the erosion of sandstone and other rocks to create beautiful beehive shapes.

It is a popular bonsai tree as it is fast growing and tolerant to pruning.
