| More than 80 per cent of Australia’s plants, mammals, reptiles and frogs are unique to Australia and cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Some of the best-known animals are the kangaroo, koala, echidna, dingo, platypus, wallaby and wombat. Many of these native animals can sometimes be difficult to spot in the wild but can certainly be found in zoos and wildlife parks across the country. Bunya Pine is a coniferous tree native to Queensland in Australia. It can grow to around 150 feet in height with many of these trees being found in the Bunya Mountains. The cones can at times be bigger than a pineapple and its edible nuts are about 5 cm long. To the Indigenous Australians, it was extremely important and they considered it a sacred tree. About every three years, between January and March, Aboriginals used to gather for tribal ceremonies, hunting, feasting and corroborees. These celebrations were called the Bunya feasts. Today, it is planted as an ornamental tree in USA, New Zealand and China. |
