Witch Hazel

Witch Hazel is a small deciduous tree that can grow upto 40 feet in height. The fruit is a two-part capsule containing a single glossy black seed in each of the two parts; the capsule splits explosively at maturity after flowering, ejecting the seeds with sufficient force to fly for distances of up to 33 feet from the parent plant thus giving it another name “Snapping Hazel”

The North American species is occasionally called winterbloom.
Native Americans produced an extract by boiling the stems and producing a decoction which was used to treat swellings, inflammations, and tumors.
