Umbrella Thorn

Umbrella Thorn tree is native to Africa.

It can grow upto a height of 69 feet. It is known to tolerate high alkalinity, drought, high temperatures, sandy & stony soils and sand blasting.

The gum is edible and can is used as Gum Arabic – as an emulsifier, thickening agent for food and a binder in paints. Many parts of this tree are used by natives for a vast number of purposes including decorations, weapons, tools and medicines.

The tree is also emerging as an important species in the battle to ‘green the deserts’, as it is one of few trees to tolerate very harsh environments.
