| Tamarillo is a small but fast growing tree native to Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia and Bolivia. It is adaptable and very easy to grow. It prefers a subtropical climate with rainfall between 600 and 4000 mm and annual temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. Fresh fruits are blended together with water and sugar to make a juice in many Central and South American countries. It is used as a pickle and chutney in Nepal. The fruits are very high in vitamins and iron and are low in calories – about 40 calories per fruit. It is tangy and variably sweet often compared to kiwifruit, tomato, guava or passion fruit. |
