| Sugarcane is the world’s largest crop. It is estimated to be cultivated in more than 90 countries, with a worldwide harvest of more than 1.5 billion tonnes with Brazil being the largest producer of it. It accounts for 80% of overall sugar produced and because of the sweetness level, it is used in making innumerable kinds of sweets in various countries. Other than sugar, products derived from sugarcane include falernum, molasses, rum, bagasse and ethanol. In some regions, people use sugarcane reeds to make pens, mats, screens, and thatch. |
