| The Spindle tree is a small tree native to East Asia and has over 130 species. The wood of some species was traditionally used for the making of spindles for spinning wool and hence the name. Its fruit is a pink-red pod-like berry which splits open to reveal orange seeds. Many of its species are used for medicinal purposes and parts of the plants are harmful to humans. Its seeds are eaten by some birds which digest the fleshy seed coat and disperse the seeds in their droppings. It is popularly grown for exhibiting its very bright red autumnal colours and for the decorative berries. |
