Pistachio

Pistachio is native to the Middle East and Central Asia.

The tree can grow to a height of 33 feet and is highly tolerant to saline soil. It fairs poorly in conditions of high humidity and is susceptible to root rot in winter if it gets too much water and the soil is not free draining. Long and hot summers are required for proper ripening of the fruit.

The major producers of pistachios are Iran, USA and Turkey. These trees are planted in orchards and take around 7 to 10 years to reach significant production. Peak production is reached at approximately 20 years.

The nuts are a rich source of Vitamin E and minerals like copper, manganese, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc and selenium.
