| Peepal – A Sacred Tree in Hinduism. It is also known as the Bo-Tree and is native to India and surrounding countries. It is a very large tree and is called ‘Ashvattha’ in Sanskrit. It has been worshiped for a long time. Gautam Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment under this tree and is also sacred to Buddhist. Hence it is also called the Bodhi tree or ‘tree of enlightenment’. Lord Krishna is believed to have died under this tree, after which the present Kali Yuga began. The roots represent Brahma, the trunk Vishnu and the leaves Shiva. Women have worshiped this tree to be blessed with sons. They tie a red thread or red cloth around its trunk. It is inauspicious to cut down this tree. |
