Giant Water Lily

Victoria amazonica or Giant Water Lily grows in the shallow waters of the Amazon River basin, as well as bayous and specific lakes in Brazil. The leaves of the giant Amazon water lily grow over 2.5m across and the flowers can be 30cm (12) wide.

The lily is well defended from fish and other animals by sharp spines on the flower buds, leaf stalks, and underside of leaves. In contrast, the leaf surface feels smooth to touch and slightly rubbery.

Giant Water Lily is most valued as an ornamental plant, for which it has been highly prized ever since its discovery. There have also been many folklores about this flower.
