| Elm is a deciduous tree that was among the most widely planted ornamental trees in Europe and North America from the 18th to the early 20th century. It can reach over 100 feet in height and was popular as a street tree in towns and cities thereby creating high-tunnelled effects. During the great famine of 1812 in Norway, the tree’s bark was cut into strips and boiled, this helped sustained much of the rural population. Its seeds are very nutritious and contain 45% crude protein. |
