East Indian Ebony or Kendu as known in India is a small tree native to India and Sri Lanka.

The fruit is edible and considered as a poor man’s food. Its leaves possess antimicrobial properties, while its bark shows antihyperglycemic activity.

The leaves are wrapped around tobacco to create the Indian beedi which has outsold conventional cigarettes in many states in India.
