Durian

Durian is the name of a tree and its fruit. It is called the ‘King of Fruits’ and is native to southeast Asia.

The tree is large and grows to around 80-164 ft in height depending on the species. The fruit can grow up to 12 inches long, around 6 inches in diameter and weighs around 3 kg.

The fruit emits a distinctive odour that is strong. This persistent odour has led to the fruit’s banishment from certain hotels and public transportation in southeast Asia.

Durian has been featured on both ‘Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern’, ‘No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain’ and as an ingredient on ‘Chopped’. Whole frozen durians are shipped from Thailand to Asian markets and Chinatowns in Western countries.
