| Chandra Shekhar Azad was an Indian revolutionary and freedom fighter. He played a very important role in India’s fight for independence. In his last fight with armed police, he was in a meeting with Sukhdev at Alfred Park – now named ‘Chandra Shekhar Azad Park’. After a long shoot out, he was wounded and having only one bullet to spare, he took his life under a tree. He helped Sukhdev escape. This tree became sacred and was worshiped by locals. The British found out about this and cut the tree down. To this day, the park attracts a large amount of people. |
