Biodiesel Tree

The Biodiesel Tree!

Jatropha is a small tree native to tropical America and is now grown in many tropical and sub-tropical areas. The seeds contain around 27% to 40% oil that can be processed to produce a high-quality biodiesel fuel and can be used in a standard diesel engine.

The oil is harmful for human consumption as it induces vomiting and diarrhea. It has been used for illumination, soap, candles and in the adulteration of olive oil.

The tree requires five times more water per unit of energy than sugarcane and corn. In India, the crushed leaves are applied near horses’ eyes to repel flies.
