Trees allow water to be drained into the ground. Their canopies absorb the force of the raindrop and thereby prevent soil erosion, their roots absorb water from the soil, making the soil drier and able to store more rainwater. These roots hold the soil in place, reducing the movement of sediments that can shrink river channels downstream.”
