Neel or Indigo is a colour most esteemed in India. Indigo is Latin for the greatest Indian dye, meaning the colour of India. This colour was much in demand by the nobles of the Roman Empire.

Navigational texts have mentioned indigo as a popular export from India to Egypt and was later found to be used as a dye in Egyptian mummy cloths. It is also mentioned in scriptures as early as 300 B.C. and the wide variety of colours that can be obtained from its many species.
