| The Mahua tree is arguably the most valuable of Indian trees because its flowers are a nutritive lifeline for millions of poor people. In season, succulent flowers fall to the ground just before dawn. Deer, monkeys, wild pig, jackals and bear compete to gather them. A large tree bears upto 300 kg of flowers in a season. The seeds yield mahua butter used in cooking and to adulterate ghee. The oil-cake is used as a detergent and fish poison. |
