Jhand

Jhand is a vital resource in arid regions. The sweetish bark can be ground into flour and saved lives in the Great Rajputana Famine of 1868-69.

It provides nutritious fodder and the pods are cooked and eaten in Rajasthan. The bark is used medicinally to treat a range of maladies from asthma, leucoderma, leprosy, muscular tremors, even wandering of the mind.

Jhand is deeply revered in the desert.
