| Dhak also known as ‘Flame of the Forest’ is the host tree most used to rear lac-insects, producing a quality shellac known as ragini. The ruby-red gum called Bengal kino along with the seed oil and flowers has medicinal uses. The inner bark is used to make rope. The flowers yield an orange die used in Holi. An extensive rural cottage industry is based on the stitching together dhak leaves as plates. Dhak is sometimes planted to reclaim saline lands where little else will grow. |
