Meswak

Meswak, popularly known as Toothbrush Plant or Chewing stick is a commonly found Mangrove associate plant, generally found in areas where tidal influence is low. It can tolerate high salinity.

Meswak branches and bark are used for oral hygiene, religious and social purposes. It has also been used to treat toothache.

It was used by the Babylonians some 7000 years ago; it was later used by the Greek and Roman empires, and by ancient Egyptians. It also features prominently in Islamic religious practices for Oral hygiene.
