| The Australian continent is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species. It is the 6th largest country by total area and was inhabited by indigenous Australians for around 50,000 years prior to British settlement. Antarctic Beech can grow to a height of over 150 feet and is found in the high altitude areas of eastern Australia. The genus is represented by around forty species that only occur in the Southern Hemisphere. Besides Australia, it can be found in Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, New Guinea and New Caledonia. The distribution of this species occurred during the break up of Gondwana, the Great Southern land. This break up was part of the Continental Drift forming the continents of the world that we know today. Some of these trees are said to be around 12,000 years old and fossils have been found in Antarctica. |
