Neem – A Sacred Tree in Hinduism.

Neem is known for its various medicinal benefits. It is a highly revered tree among the Hindus as it is believed to be a manifestation of ‘Goddess Durga’ or ‘Maa Kali’.

The tree is sometimes referred to as ‘Neemari Devi’ and is worshiped.

Neem, in Bengal is considered to be the tree which is the abode of ‘Sitala’ (the great Pox-mother who can cause or cure disease). Pox is treated by rubbing the body with neem leaves while praying to Her.

The smoke of burning neem is said to protect both the living and the dead from evil spirits. Mahatma Gandhi was a believer in neem. Prayer meetings were conducted at the Sabarmati Ashram under a neem tree and a neem leaf chutney was a part of his everyday diet.
