| The Brazil nut tree is native to Brazil, Columbia, Venezuela, Peru and other South American countries. It is a large tree that can reach heights of upto 160 feet and is said to live for 500 to a 1000 years. Its yellow flowers contain very sweet nectar and can only be pollinated by an insect strong enough to lift the coiled hood on the flower and with a tongue long enough to negotiate the complex coiled flower. Brazil nuts are 18% protein, 13% carbohydrates, and 69% fat by weight, and 91% of their calories come from fat. It is also a good source of vitamins and minerals. Despite the name, the largest exporter of Brazil nuts is not Brazil but Bolivia.
