| Aokigahara (Sea of Forests) is a 35-square-kilometre forest that lies at the northwest base of Mount Fuji in Japan. The forest contains a number of rocky and icy caverns. It is known for being exceptionally quiet due to the wind-blocking density of the trees and an absence of wildlife. The forest floor consists primarily of volcanic rock and is difficult to penetrate with hand tools like picks or shovels. It is a popular place for suicides and is reported as the most popular in Japan and second in the world after San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. Documented statistics during the period leading up to 1988 show about 100 suicides occurred there every year. The high rate of suicide has led Japanese officials to place signs inside the forest, in Japanese and English, urging suicidal visitors to seek help and reconsider their actions. |
