| Sal tree is native to the Indian subcontinent and has religious significance. In Hinduism, it is named ‘shala’ in Sanskrit as it is said to be favoured by Vishnu. In Buddhism, it is said that Queen My of Sakya gave birth to Gautama Buddha under a sal tree or an asoka tree in a garden in Lumbini, in south Nepal. Its resin is used in indigenous medicine as an astringent and is given to cure diarrhea and dysentery. It is also used as an ingredient of ointments for skin diseases. |
